Senior WordPress Developer
About the Role
We're hiring a Senior WordPress Developer to serve as the primary technical resource across our web portfolio, including a flagship site serving upwards 1M+ monthly visitors, a WordPress Multisite network powering 20+ patient registry microsites, a membership portal integrated with Salesforce and Stripe, and internal tools supporting our mission in the rare disease space.
This is not a client-facing role, but it is deeply collaborative. You'll work directly with our IT team and internal stakeholders to architect solutions, resolve complex technical challenges, and maintain the infrastructure that powers our organization.
What You'll Do
-------------------------------------------------------
Consult with IT and internal stakeholders to diagnose systemic issues and architect strategic solutions before they become emergencies.
Resolve advanced technical tickets and bugs routed from our triage team.
Build and maintain custom WordPress plugins and themes with strong architectural judgment - knowing when to extend a theme vs. build a plugin vs. leverage an existing integration.
Own the health and performance of complex WordPress Multisite environments.
Design, build, and troubleshoot integrations between WordPress and Salesforce, including bidirectional data sync, custom field mapping, and user reconciliation workflows.
Extend the WordPress REST API for custom data handling and third-party integrations. Manage hosting infrastructure and routing across WP Engine and Cloudflare.
Lead site optimization efforts including caching strategies, CDN configuration, database performance, and Core Web Vitals.
Required Experience
-------------------------------------------------------
Advanced PHP development - you write clean, well-architected code, not just functional code.
WordPress at the infrastructure level - Custom theme and plugin development from scratch, hooks and filters, WP-CLI, Multisite administration. No page builders.
Salesforce-WordPress integration - you've built and maintained real sync workflows, not just installed a connector plugin.
Third-party API integrations - REST APIs, webhooks, authentication flows, error handling, and data mapping.
Preferred experience with:
-------------------------------------------------------
WordPress hosting management preferably on WP Engine - you understand their environment, deployment workflows, and caching layer.
Gravity Forms including custom hooks, validation, and external data routing.
Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and ACF Flexible Content for complex content architectures.
WPML or equivalent multilingual/localization infrastructure.
Cloudflare configuration including DNS, page rules, and caching.
JavaScript (jQuery and vanilla JS); React and Gutenberg block development is a plus.
CSS frameworks (Bootstrap, Tailwind).
Technical SEO best practices.
WP-CLI scripting for bulk operations and site management.
WP Cron and WP Engine's alternative cron implementation.
